Schallaburg Castle stands on a hill about 6 km south of Melk. First recorded as a fortress in 1242, it was rebuilt from around 1540 by the Losenstein family into a Renaissance residence with a two-storey arcaded courtyard decorated in terracotta. Since 1974 it has been an exhibition centre of the state of Lower Austria, with a new exhibition each season.
