Memorial to the Abolition of Slavery

The Memorial to the Abolition of Slavery on the Quai de la Fosse recalls Nantes' role as France's main slave-trading port in the 18th and 19th centuries. Designed by Krzysztof Wodiczko and Julian Bonder and opened in 2012, it has 2,000 glass inserts along the riverbank, many naming slave ships, and a passage beneath the quay lined with texts on freedom.
