Leaning Tower of Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the freestanding bell tower of Pisa Cathedral on the Piazza dei Miracoli, begun in 1173 and finished with its belfry in 1372. Soft ground made it tilt during construction; work from 1993 to 2001 reduced the lean to about four degrees. Visitors climb some 290 steps to the top, where seven bells hang.
