The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium lies in Highland Park in the east of the city and opened in 1898. Its grounds are laid out as habitats such as an African savanna and an Asian forest, and the PPG Aquarium, opened in 2000, shows sharks, penguins and river and ocean life.
