botanical garden · Queenstown Queenstown Gardens is a botanical garden on the small peninsula between Queenstown Bay and the Frankton Arm of Lake Wakatipu. Planting began in 1866 and 1867; paths lead past tall Douglas firs, a rose garden, ponds with a stone arch bridge, the 1913 Scott Memorial and a disc golf course, with views of the lake and mountains.

Lake Wakatipu, Whakatipu Waimāori in Māori, is an 80-kilometre lake in the shape of a dog leg, with Queenstown on its northern shore. It is New Zealand's longest lake and up to 420 metres deep; the Remarkables rise along its south-eastern side, and a regular seiche makes the water in Queenstown Bay rise and fall by about 20 centimetres.
