Arkadi Monastery

Arkadi Monastery is a fortified Orthodox monastery on a plateau 23 km southeast of Rethymno, with a 16th-century church whose facade mixes Renaissance and Baroque forms. In November 1866, during the Cretan revolt against Ottoman rule, the defenders blew up the powder magazine rather than surrender. Visitors see the church, the refectory, the powder magazine and a museum.
