Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island lies in San Francisco Bay and served as a military fort, a military prison and, from 1934 to 1963, a federal penitentiary; Native American activists occupied it from 1969 to 1971. Visitors arrive by ferry from Pier 33 to walk through the cellhouse, the lighthouse grounds, the gardens and the seabird colonies.
