Lombard Street

Lombard Street's crooked block on Russian Hill, between Hyde and Leavenworth streets, descends in eight hairpin turns. The one-way, brick-paved section was built in 1922 to ease a 27 percent grade that was too steep for most vehicles, and it is lined with flower beds and houses. Stairways on both sides let visitors walk down.
