About St. Augustine
St. Augustine, on Florida's Atlantic coast, grew from the Spanish settlement of 1565, and the Castillo de San Marcos still guards its old town. The Castillo de San Marcos, built between 1672 and 1695, stands on Matanzas Bay at the end of St. George Street. Henry Flagler's hotels of 1888 on King Street are now Flagler College and the Lightner Museum. The Cathedral Basilica faces the Plaza de la Constitución, from which the Bridge of Lions crosses to Anastasia Island. North of the centre lie the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park and Mission Nombre de Dios. Two days cover the old town on foot.
