Fort Matanzas National Monument

Fort Matanzas is a small coquina watchtower fort built by the Spanish in 1740–1742 on Rattlesnake Island to guard the Matanzas Inlet, the southern approach to St. Augustine, about 23 km south of the city. A National Park Service ferry crosses from the visitor centre on Anastasia Island; the grounds have a boardwalk and beach.
