Vaxholm Fortress

Vaxholm Fortress covers the islet of Vaxholmen in the Stockholm archipelago, off the town of Vaxholm about 17 km north-east of Stockholm, and is reached by a short ferry. Gustav Vasa first fortified the strait in 1548; most of the present stone fortress dates from 1833–1863. It houses the Vaxholm Fortress Museum on 500 years of coastal defence.
