Fort San Domingo

Fort San Domingo in Tamsui was first built by the Spanish in 1628 and rebuilt in brick by the Dutch in 1644; the local name Hongmaocheng means 'fort of the red-haired'. From 1867 to 1972 it served the British consulate, whose red-brick residence of 1891 stands beside it, and both buildings are open as a museum.
