Jiufen is a former gold-mining town on a steep hillside above the north-east coast in Ruifang District, New Taipei. Its narrow Jishan Street and the stepped Shuqi Road are lined with teahouses, red lanterns and snack stalls selling taro balls and fish balls, with views over the sea to Keelung Islet.
