Australian Butterfly Sanctuary
The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is a walk-through butterfly aviary in the centre of Kuranda, in the rainforest north-west of Cairns, opened in 1987. Around 1,200 tropical butterflies, mostly Far North Queensland species such as the Cairns birdwing and the Ulysses butterfly, fly freely among the plants; all are bred in the sanctuary's own laboratory, which visitors can tour.
