Gauguin & Kihara – Førstehåndsindtryk

Until 6 Dec 2026

The Glyptotek has one of the world's finest collections of works by the French artist Paul Gauguin (1848–1903). In recent years, large parts of the museum's collection of 58 works – spanning painting, wood carving, drawing and ceramics – have been on loan to renowned museums around the world. Now they are finally back and are exhibited together in a comprehensive presentation that offers the chance to experience Gauguin's well-known works from new perspectives. The Gauguin collection is joined by the Japanese-Samoan contemporary artist Yuki Kihara (b. 1975) and her video work First Impressions: Paul Gauguin, recently acquired by the museum. Together they present a dialogue across time, cultural differences and oceanic distances.

Magt og mode i Romerriget

Magt og mode i Romerriget

Magt og mode i Romerriget (Power and Fashion in the Roman Empire) is the largest special exhibition about antiquity in the museum's history. Step into a world of purple, drapery, fantastic footwear and fabulous hairstyles as the exhibition _Magt og mode i Romerriget_ – for the first time ever, in Denmark or internationally – puts the spotlight on ancient fashion in an ambitious special exhibition spread over more than 1,000 square metres. Drawing on the Glyptotek's unique collection of Roman portrait sculptures, and with major loans from international museums, the exhibition explores how people in the Roman Empire used clothing and adornment to signal status, identity and power.

Dyrenes indtog - Skulpturer af Antoine-Louis Barye

Why do cows suddenly take up so much space in 19th-century art? How did living lions end up in Paris? Can an elephant actually run like other animals? And what can small sculptures tell us about how humans have viewed animals and nature? These are just some of the questions raised in the exhibition Dyrenes indtog. Skulpturer af Antoine-Louis Barye. With the Glyptotek's collection of 34 small animal sculptures by the French artist Antoine-Louis Barye (1795–1875), the public can get right up close to the animals.

Palmyra

Palmyra

Based on the museum's outstanding collection of Palmyrene funerary portraits – the largest of its kind outside Syria – the exhibition tells the story of life, death and remembrance in Palmyra. In the middle of the Syrian desert lay Palmyra. From the 1st to the 3rd century CE, the city was a hub between the Roman Empire, Persia and the trade routes to China, Afghanistan and India. Through the city flowed not only precious goods, but also people, ideas and traditions. This created an urban culture in which local and global impulses merged into an expression that was both international and entirely its own.
