Dürnstein Castle

Dürnstein Castle is the ruin of a 12th-century rock castle built by the Kuenring family on a crag above Dürnstein and the Danube, linked to the town by a defensive wall. From December 1192 to March 1193 King Richard I of England, the Lionheart, was held captive here. Swedish troops took it in 1645, and from 1662 it was no longer permanently inhabited.
