Jökulsárlón is a glacial lagoon at the foot of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, beside Route 1 between Skaftafell and Höfn. It began to form in the 1930s as the glacier retreated and is now more than 280 m deep. Icebergs calve from the glacier and drift towards the short river to the sea; a 1.2 km trail leads from the car park to the Helguhóll ridge.

tourist attraction · Jökulsárlón Diamond Beach is the black sand beach of Fellsfjara on Breiðamerkursandur, on both sides of the outlet of Jökulsárlón south of Route 1. Blocks of glacier ice carried out of the lagoon by the tide wash up and lie on the sand. A 1 km trail runs along the eastern beach, Eystri-Fellsfjara, and the river can be crossed on foot under the bridge.

Fjallsárlón is a glacier lagoon on Breiðamerkursandur, about 10 km west of Jökulsárlón near Route 1. The Fjallsjökull glacier, an outlet of Öræfajökull, calves into it, so smaller icebergs float on the water. Since 2017 the lagoon has been part of Vatnajökull National Park; great skuas nest on the shore in early summer.
