    Klosterneuburg Abbey is an Augustinian monastery above the Danube just north of Vienna, founded in 1114 by Margrave Leopold III and his wife Agnes. The Baroque complex was built mostly between 1730 and 1834, and the church has neo-Gothic twin towers. Its treasures include the Verdun Altar of 1181 by Nicholas of Verdun, with 45 gilded copper plates.

    Albertina Klosterneuburg is a branch of Vienna's Albertina for contemporary art, in the building designed by Heinz Tesar for the Essl Museum, which showed the Essl collection from 1999 to 2016. The collection passed to the Albertina, and the house reopened under its new name in April 2024 with changing exhibitions of contemporary art.

    The House of Strauss is a museum of the Strauss family of composers in the Casino Zögernitz in Döbling, a Biedermeier dance hall opened in 1837. About 2,000 m² of multimedia rooms trace how Johann Strauss father and son, Josef and Eduard shaped the Viennese waltz, ending with a short show in the historic ballroom where all four performed.

    The Schlumberger Kellerwelten are the vaulted cellars of the Schlumberger sparkling-wine house on Heiligenstädter Straße in Döbling, a company founded by Robert Schlumberger in 1842. Tours of 30 to 45 minutes, with an audio guide in eight languages, explain the traditional bottle-fermentation method and end with a tasting.

  • Danube Tower

    The Danube Tower is a 252-metre tower in Donaupark in Vienna's 22nd district, built for the 1964 International Garden Show to a design by Hannes Lintl and Robert Krapfenbauer. Two lifts reach the observation deck at 150 metres in about 35 seconds, and the tower head also holds a revolving restaurant and a café.

    The Votivkirche is a neo-Gothic church beside the University of Vienna, built from 1856 to 1879 to designs by Heinrich von Ferstel as thanks for Emperor Franz Joseph's survival of an assassination attempt in 1853. Its museum in the raised oratory shows liturgical objects, banners and the carved Antwerp Passion Altar of around 1500.

    Vienna City Hall is the Gothic Revival seat of the mayor and of the city and state government, built from 1872 to 1883 to designs by Friedrich von Schmidt. Its 98-metre central tower carries the Rathausmann, a copper standard-bearer in armour. The square in front hosts seasonal events, and the city runs guided tours of the interior.

    The Burgtheater is Austria's national theatre and stages German-language drama on the Ringstrasse, opposite the City Hall. Its Neo-Renaissance building was designed by Gottfried Semper and Carl von Hasenauer and opened in 1888; Gustav and Ernst Klimt and Franz Matsch painted the ceilings of its two grand staircases.

    The Austrian Parliament Building on the Ringstrasse is the seat of the National Council and the Federal Council. Theophil Hansen designed it in Greek Revival style, built from 1874 to 1883, with the Pallas Athena Fountain in front. After a renovation it reopened in 2023 with a visitor centre, guided tours and public galleries for sittings.

  • St. Peter's Church

    St. Peter's Church is a Baroque Catholic church on Petersplatz, just off the Graben, built from 1701 to 1733; Gabriele Montani began it and Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt continued the work from 1703. Its green oval dome rises 56 metres, and inside Johann Michael Rottmayr painted the dome fresco. Since 1970 the church has been entrusted to Opus Dei.

    The Wiener Riesenrad is a 64.75-metre Ferris wheel at the entrance of the Prater in Leopoldstadt, built in 1897 by the English engineer Walter Basset for the golden jubilee of Emperor Franz Joseph I. Damaged in the Second World War, it was rebuilt with 15 of its original 30 cabins, which give views over the city.

    The Spanish Riding School in Vienna's Hofburg preserves classical dressage and trains Lipizzaner horses; it was first named in 1565. The chestnut-lined Hauptallee runs about 4.4 km from Praterstern to the Lusthaus, and at its northern end lies the Wurstelprater amusement park with the Giant Ferris Wheel.

    Heldenplatz is a public square in front of the Hofburg, laid out in the 19th century as part of the never-completed Kaiserforum. It is framed by the curved Neue Hofburg wing and holds equestrian statues of Archduke Charles and Prince Eugene of Savoy by Anton Dominik Fernkorn; in 1938 Hitler announced the Anschluss from the Neue Hofburg's balcony here.

    The Imperial Treasury in the Hofburg is entered from the Schweizerhof, the oldest courtyard of the palace. In 21 rooms of secular and ecclesiastical collections it shows treasures gathered by the Habsburgs over centuries, including the Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire and the crown, orb and sceptre of the Austrian Empire. It belongs to the Kunsthistorisches Museum.

    St. Stephen's Cathedral on Stephansplatz is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Vienna. Its Romanesque and Gothic form was largely begun under Duke Rudolf IV in the 14th century on the site of a church consecrated in 1147, and it is known for its patterned tiled roof and 136-metre south tower.
