Palamidi is a Venetian fortress on a 216-metre hill above Nafplio, built between 1711 and 1714 to plans by the engineers Antonio Giancix and Pierre de la Salle. Its eight bastions are linked by walls along the ridge; the Miltiades bastion served as a prison where Theodoros Kolokotronis, a leader of the Greek Revolution, was held. A long stairway climbs to it from the old town.

Bourtzi is a Venetian sea fortress on a small islet in the harbour of Nafplio, begun in 1471 by the architect Antonio Gambello and strengthened after 1699 with a tall tower and gun bastions. In the 19th century it housed the town's executioner, and from the 1930s it held a small hotel. Today it is open to visitors, who reach it by boat from the Nafplio waterfront.

At its height between 1400 and 1200 BC it was one of the main centres of the Mycenaean world; visitors walk along Cyclopean walls of huge rough blocks, vaulted galleries built into the walls and the remains of the palace. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Mycenae.
