Plitvice Lakes National Park covers about 297 km² of karst forest in central Croatia, founded in 1949 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Sixteen lakes descend in a chain of Upper and Lower Lakes, separated by travertine barriers and waterfalls; wooden boardwalks and trails follow the water, with an electric boat across Lake Kozjak and park trains.
