Lakes District Museum

The Lakes District Museum in Arrowtown, north-east of Queenstown, tells the history of the Wakatipu district: early Māori, the gold rush of the 1860s, the Chinese miners and the growth of Queenstown. Founded in 1948, it has occupied the former Bank of New Zealand building since 1955 and also runs an art gallery and Arrowtown's historic post office.
