Domus Aurea
The Domus Aurea is the palace complex that Emperor Nero built on the Oppian Hill after the great fire of 64 AD. Its surviving halls lie buried beneath the later Baths of Trajan, and visitors go underground through frescoed corridors to the domed Octagonal Room. Their rediscovery in the 15th century inspired the grotesque decoration of Renaissance painters.
