Klis Fortress stands on a rocky ridge above the village of Klis, about 12 km by road northeast of Split, guarding the pass between the Mosor and Kozjak mountains. A seat of Croatian rulers from the 9th century, it was held by the Ottomans from 1537 until Venice took it in 1648. A path leads through three walled enclosures past the round Oprah tower and the church of St Vitus.
