Toome Hill is a wooded hill in the centre of Tartu where the town began: a stronghold stood here by the 7th century, followed by a bishop's castle in the Middle Ages. Today it is a park with the ruined cathedral, the Old Observatory, monuments to university scholars and two bridges over the roads below, Angel's Bridge and Devil's Bridge.

The University of Tartu Botanical Garden was founded in 1803 and has occupied a former bastion on Lai Street, at the northern edge of the old town, since 1806. Its open-air collections are laid out as eleven gardens around a pond, and the greenhouses, including a palm house, hold tropical and desert plants as well as turtles, fish and parrots.
