Eldfell

Eldfell is a volcanic cone about 200 metres high on the east side of Heimaey, formed in an eruption that began without warning on 23 January 1973. Ash and lava destroyed around 400 homes, and pumping sea water onto the lava flow kept the harbour open. Marked paths lead up the red slopes to the crater rim, with views over the town.
