The Castro Fortress crowns O Castro hill in the centre of Vigo. It was built from 1665, during the war with Portugal, as part of a defensive system with the San Sebastián fort and a town wall, and was taken by British forces in 1719. Its surviving walls now enclose a park and a viewpoint over the city and the Ría de Vigo.

MARCO is Vigo's museum of contemporary art, opened in 2002 in a granite building on Rúa do Príncipe that was completed in 1880 as the city's courthouse and prison. Four former inner courtyards became glass-roofed galleries. The museum has no permanent collection and shows changing exhibitions of contemporary art.
