Tahrir Square
Tahrir Square is the large traffic square at the heart of downtown Cairo, laid out in the 19th century under Khedive Ismail. Since its 2020 redesign an ancient obelisk of Ramesses II and four ram-headed sphinxes from Karnak stand at its centre. The Egyptian Museum lines its north side, and in 2011 it was the focus of the protests that ended Hosni Mubarak's rule.
