Itsukushima Shrine

Itsukushima Shrine stands on the island of Miyajima, about 20 km from central Hiroshima, its halls and corridors built on piles over a tidal bay. The layout goes back to Taira no Kiyomori in 1168, and the vermilion Great Torii stands in the water offshore. It has been a World Heritage Site since 1996 and is reached by a ten-minute ferry from Miyajimaguchi.
