    Stortorget is Malmö's main square, laid out from 1538 after the Monastery of the Holy Spirit and its cemetery were cleared. It is lined by the Town Hall of 1547, the Governor's Residence, Jørgen Kock's House and the Hotel Kramer, and at its centre stands John Börjeson's equestrian statue of King Charles X Gustav, made for the exhibition of 1896.

  • Lilla Torg

    Lilla Torg is a cobbled square in Malmö's old town, created in the 1590s as a market place beside Stortorget. A brick market hall covered it from 1903 until 1968; today it is framed by half-timbered and brick houses, among them Hedmanska gården from the 1590s and the Faxe House from the 1760s, whose ground floors hold restaurants with outdoor tables.

  • St. Peter's Church

    St. Peter's Church is Malmö's oldest preserved building, a three-aisled Brick Gothic basilica with transepts built in the 14th century as the town's only parish church. Inside are late medieval wall paintings and a carved altarpiece made in 1611, and the tower with its tall spire rises over the old town between Stortorget and the railway station.

  • Moderna Museet Malmö

    Moderna Museet Malmö is the Malmö branch of Sweden's state museum of modern and contemporary art, opened in December 2009 in the former Rooseum. The building is an electricity plant from 1900–01 by John Smedberg, extended with an orange-red annex of perforated metal by Tham & Videgård; it shows changing exhibitions and works from the Moderna Museet collection.

  • Malmö Castle

    Malmö Castle (Malmöhus) is a brick fortress surrounded by a moat, built for the Danish king Frederick I between 1526 and 1539 on the site of a stronghold begun in 1434. It served as a prison from 1828 to 1909 and has housed Malmö Museum since 1937, with the restored royal apartments, exhibitions on the castle's history, natural history displays and an aquarium.

  • Technology and Maritime Museum

    The Technology and Maritime Museum, Teknikens och sjöfartens hus, is the Malmö Museum building on Malmöhusvägen opposite Malmöhus Castle. Exhibitions cover engines, vehicles, aviation and shipping; visitors can go inside the submarine U3, in service from 1943 to 1964, and see a Saab 37 Viggen, an experimentarium and the Wisdome dome cinema.

  • Malmö Konsthall

    Malmö Konsthall is a hall for contemporary art near Triangeln in central Malmö, designed by Klas Anshelm and built in 1971–1974 of concrete, glass, wood and aluminium. Its large open exhibition room, lit through skylights and a north-facing light well, hosts changing exhibitions, talks and films; the older Hantverkshuset next door holds the bookshop and restaurant.

  • Turning Torso

    Turning Torso

    Turning Torso is a 190-metre residential tower in Malmö's Western Harbour, designed by Santiago Calatrava and opened in 2005. Its nine five-storey segments turn around a central core so that the top is rotated 90 degrees against the base; the building holds offices and 147 flats and is not open to visitors, so it is seen from the streets and the waterfront around it.

  • Pildammsparken

    Pildammsparken is a 45-hectare park in Malmö laid out around two former reservoirs that once supplied the town with water. It was the site of the Baltic Exhibition of 1914, from which the Margareta Pavilion and the flower-lined Blomstergatan survive, and its central lawn Tallriken, a circle 160 metres across, is used for events, with sculptures along the paths.

  • Ribersborgs Kallbadhus

    Ribersborgs Kallbadhus

    Ribersborgs Kallbadhus is an open-air sea bath at the end of a wooden pier off Ribersborg beach in Malmö, opened in 1898 and rebuilt after a storm a few years later. It is open all year and has separate sections for women and men, each with saunas and nude bathing in the sea, a mixed sauna, and a café and restaurant; it has been a protected historic building since 1995.
