The Cathedral of San Carlos Borromeo, also called the Royal Presidio Chapel, was built of local sandstone in 1791–94 as the chapel of Monterey's Spanish presidio. It is the oldest stone building in California and the only surviving structure of the original presidio. It still serves as a parish church and as the cathedral of the Diocese of Monterey.

Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo stands at the mouth of the Carmel River on the southern edge of Carmel-by-the-Sea, about 7 km south of Monterey. Founded in 1770 and moved here in 1771, it was the headquarters of the Alta California missions under Junípero Serra. Restored from 1931, it keeps its original bell tower and houses museums.
