Nikkō Tōshō-gū

Nikkō Tōshō-gū is the Shinto shrine and mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Most of its buildings were raised in 1636 under his grandson Iemitsu, covered in lacquer, gold leaf and carvings, among them the Yōmeimon gate, the three monkeys and the sleeping cat. It is part of the Shrines and Temples of Nikkō World Heritage Site.
