tourist attraction · Saint-Tropez Place des Lices, also called Place Carnot, is the main square of Saint-Tropez, a short walk south of the old harbour. Laid out in its present form in the early 19th century, its sandy ground is shaded by rows of plane trees and used for games of pétanque. A Provençal market is held here on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and cafés line its edges.

The Citadel of Saint-Tropez stands on a hill above the town and its gulf. Its hexagonal keep with three round turrets was built from 1602 by the king's engineer Raymond de Bonnefons, and bastioned ramparts and moats followed in the 1620s. Since 2013 the keep has housed the Museum of Maritime History, which tells the story of the town's sailors.
