Shaped by volcanic activity around 25,000 years ago, it holds two crater lakes, the Belső-tó and the Külső-tó, and more than a hundred geyser cones, the largest known as the Aranyház. In 1952 it became Hungary's first protected landscape area.

Tihany Abbey is a Benedictine monastery on the Tihany peninsula overlooking Lake Balaton, founded in 1055 by King Andrew I of Hungary. Its crypt holds his tomb, the only preserved grave of a medieval Hungarian king, and its 1055 founding charter contains the oldest surviving words written in Hungarian. The church ceiling was painted by Károly Lotz.
