About Oaxaca
Oaxaca de Juárez, the capital of the state of Oaxaca, is a colonial city of green stone in a valley of the southern highlands. The church of Santo Domingo, covered inside in gilded stucco, has the Museum of the Cultures of Oaxaca in its former convent and the Ethnobotanical Garden behind. The cathedral and the Basilica of Solitude stand in the historic centre, near the Rufino Tamayo Museum, the Graphic Arts Institute and the Mercado 20 de Noviembre. On a ridge above the city lies the Zapotec capital Monte Albán; to the east are the Tree of Tule and the ruins of Mitla.
