About Jakarta
Jakarta is Indonesia's capital, a vast city on Java's north coast where the National Monument rises over Merdeka Square. The National Monument, the Istiqlal Mosque, Jakarta Cathedral and the National Museum stand around Merdeka Square in the centre. To the north, Kota Tua, the old Dutch Batavia, keeps the Jakarta History Museum, the Wayang Museum and the Fine Art and Ceramic Museum around Fatahillah Square, with the wooden schooners of Sunda Kelapa harbour nearby. Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Ragunan Zoo and the Dunia Fantasi amusement park at Ancol lie further out. Two or three days cover the main sights; traffic is heavy, and the TransJakarta buses and the MRT help.
