    Millesgården is the former home and studio of the sculptor Carl Milles and the artist Olga Milles on Lidingö, given to the Swedish people as a foundation in 1936. Terraces above the water hold casts of Milles's sculptures, the house shows the couple's rooms and collections, and an art hall designed by Johan Celsing in 1999 holds exhibitions.

Opened in 1879 as the Artillery Museum, it traces Swedish military history from the Middle Ages to modern neutrality through weapons, uniforms, trophies and life-size scenes of soldiers and civilians.

  • Swedish Museum of Natural History

    The Swedish Museum of Natural History grew from the collections of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and became a museum in 1819. Its domed brick building in Frescati, designed by Axel Anderberg, was completed in 1916. Exhibitions cover animals, plants, fossils, minerals and human evolution, and the Cosmonova dome cinema, added in 1993, is Sweden's largest planetarium.

    The Nordic Museum on Djurgården covers Swedish cultural history and everyday life from the 16th century to the present. It was founded by Artur Hazelius, who also created Skansen, and its building by Isak Gustaf Clason was completed in 1907. A 126-metre hall with a large seated statue of Gustav Vasa leads to exhibitions on homes, clothing, festivals and the Sami.

  • Swedish Museum of Performing Arts

    The Swedish Museum of Performing Arts covers music, theatre, puppetry and dance and has been housed since 1979 in the former Crown Bakery, a 17th-century building on Sibyllegatan next to the Royal Stables and the oldest industrial building in Stockholm. Its collections include more than 6,000 instruments from the early 17th century onward, stage costumes, masks and marionettes.

  • Junibacken

    Junibacken on Djurgården is a children's attraction devoted to Swedish children's books, above all those of Astrid Lindgren, opened in 1996.     The Vasa Museum on Djurgården houses the warship Vasa, which sank in Stockholm harbour on her maiden voyage in 1628 and was raised in 1961. It shows daily life in the Viking Age through archaeological finds, reconstructed settings and a model of a Sigtuna farmer, and includes Ragnfrid's Saga, an eleven-minute ride through a Viking story.

    The Hallwyl Museum occupies Hallwyl House at Hamngatan 4, a town house finished in 1898 for Count Walther and Countess Wilhelmina von Hallwyl. The couple left the house and its contents to the Swedish state in 1920 and it opened as a museum in 1938, showing a private home of about 1900 and the countess's 50,000-object collections of paintings, arms, porcelain and silver.

    Skansen on Djurgården was opened in 1891 by Artur Hazelius as an open-air museum of rural Swedish life before industrialisation.     Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde on Djurgården was the home of Prince Eugen (1865–1947), painter and art collector, and opened as a museum in 1948 after he left it to the state. Ferdinand Boberg designed the mansion, finished in 1905, and the gallery added in 1913; they hold about 7,000 works, mostly Swedish art, and the park by the water has sculptures and an 18th-century oil mill.
