Newcastle Castle

Newcastle Castle is the medieval fortification that gave Newcastle upon Tyne its name, built on the site of the Roman fort of Pons Aelius. Its two surviving parts are the stone keep, built for Henry II between 1172 and 1177, and the Black Gate, added by Henry III in 1247–1250, with a railway viaduct running between them. Visitors can climb to the roof of the keep.
